Winter city Groningen

Winter Gold brings Groningen into wintery atmospheres this winter. From 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, the city is all about lights, coziness, and winter activities.

Under the name Winter Gold, an extensive program comes together with events spread throughout the city. For example, visit WinterWelVaart on 11, 12, or 13 December, or enjoy Winter City, which provides plenty of winter fun from 28 November to 4 January.

From atmospheric activities and cozy events to a day or weekend getaway in Groningen. There is plenty to experience during the entire winter with Winter Gold.

Winter activities

Groningen offers a range of winter activities that warm your heart. Enjoy a winter walk through the beautifully decorated streets, participate in a Christmas workshop, or visit one of the many cultural events.

Put on your skates and glide across the ice rink at the Grote Markt. Whether you are an experienced skater or on the ice for the first time, the skating rinks of Groningen provide hours of fun for young and old!

What to do during Winter Gold in Groningen

The heart of Winter Gold is Winter City at the Grote Markt. Here you will find an ice rink, Christmas market, winter café, attractions, and a Ferris wheel, among other things. Last year, Winter City attracted over 100,000 visitors. In addition, on 6 December, the lighting of the 22-meter high Christmas tree on the Grote Markt will be lit.

Another highlight is WinterWelVaart on 11, 12, and 13 December. Along Hoge, Lage, and Kleine der A lie 18 atmospherically lit historical ships. On board and along the quays, you can enjoy music, theater, art, and other Groningen acts. Simultaneously, the Winter Gold Market takes place, with no less than 175 stalls and chalets spread throughout the city center.

Outside the Grote Markt, there is also plenty of choice. Visit the Swedish Christmas market at the Sugar Terrain, discover activities in the Stadspark, Hoogkerk, Haren, and Onnen, or enjoy music during Stars on the Star.
